Beta controls the strength of the KL constraint to the reference model — lower beta lets the policy move further (stronger preference fit, higher risk of degeneration), higher beta keeps it closer to the reference (safer, weaker effect). We start from a sensible default (often around 0.1) and tune based on eval and generation quality, watching for over-optimization.
